DIY Mosaics

Most currently available mosaic tiles are 2 centimetres square. Mosaic pictures are available from a number of sources but, in order to reproduce the detail, the pictures have to be very large and, hence, expensive. The ArtCeramica range uses triangular and rectangular half tiles plus circles to enable the images to be more accurately reproduced in smaller sizes. The following sea trout example shows how the shapes can be used.

Size and DIY kit

Two sizes of completed square mosaic pictures are currently available that is approximately 0.5 x 0.5 metres (19.7 x 19.7 inches) and 0.66 x 0.66 metres (26 x 26 inches) with border spacing to match the sheets on which the tiles are supplied (See Mosaics Used below). The smaller size is suitable for fitting between floor and wall kitchen units and the larger ones for bathrooms. Both could be used for table tops or for a picture on the wall. The background tiles around the main subject is not in straight lines but more randomised for a better effect. The main images used can also be supplied without the square background. Alternative colours can also be selected.

The DIY kit comprises the whole and cut mosaic tiles in the appropriate colours, jigsaw like paper layout sheets (reversed picture), adhesive clear plastic sheets plus some guideline instructions. The adhesive sheet should be pinned over a layout sheet and tiles pressed on in the right place. The next step is to apply tile adhesive to a surface and press on a completed sheet. With a certain amount of care, the adhesive sheet can then be pealed off.

Following are the currently available large and medium size designs. They are, of course, produced on a computer. Custom designs will be considered and ideas for new ones are welcome. The pictures are small versions of the real thing with gaps between tiles painted out to prevent design layouts from being copied.

Mosaics and Colours Used

The mosaics currently being used are available in the following colours. They come in sheets of 15 x 15 tiles and can be supplied along with the DIY materials. Note that colours can vary from batch to batch and computer based colours are not necessarily accurate.
